The Evils of the Court of Public Opinion |
 |
Before you get too far into judging Michael Vick's innocence or guilt, I implore you to actually take the time to read the actual indictment for yourself. God knows you'll never get the real story from any radio show or the news.

The Facts
Michael Vick is clearly mentioned throughout the indictment but in all but one instance (#83), is not the individual doing the executing of the dogs. Even in this line item, it does not specifically state that Vick himself was responsible for executing the dogs. It states that the three defendants executed approximately 8 dogs.
Many of the accusations are circumstantial in nature. It is undetermined what type of physical evidence links Michael Vick to the accusations.
The cooperating witnesses involved in the case are also involved in dog fighting and have unclear motives for cooperating with the FBI. It is unclear as well as to the legitimacy of these claims or the credibility of the witnesses. Were plea bargains made for testimonies or are there vendettas against Vick for possible gambling wins against the cooperating witnesses? We don't know.
The Hypocrisy
In many ways, Michael Vick has already been convicted. If not by the courts of the Unites States of America, by the court of public opinion. This my friends is not justice and as Americans you should be outraged. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that Vick is innocent but the man has every right in the world to have his day in court (if it comes to that) where he will be judged on the facts. You can take a page from the recent case of the false accusations and ensuing firestorm of the Duke Lacrosse case as evidence of the evils of the court of public opinion. We all should have learned our lesson. Instead, we go accusing the next person before we know the facts. It is truly sad.
We are constantly told by people in the media what to think and what is right and wrong. What have you heard on every radio show for the last week. How disgusting and terrible Michael Vick's actions are. It is easy to get caught up in it when you hear it at every turn. But hey, it sells advertisements on their programs when there is controversy.
We are told by organizations such as PETA that the actions of Vick are evil. Yet they shamelessly sell "Sack Vick" t-shirts, hats, etc on their web site to make money off of the controversy and to spread their message of pre-judgment. We should clearly eliminate our entire court system and allow PETA to decide on the fate of our country for us. Who are they to take away a man's livelihood before he is proven of anything?
Public opinion states that our country is outraged by the concept of dog fighting and the death of animals. Yet, we have no problem at lunch today going our and having an angus burger or a ham and cheese sandwich. Furthermore, how many of us have ever adopted a pet from the Humane Society or local animal shelter or have donated money to such an organization? We get on our moral high horse when it is convenient and popular but don't normally do anything to really prove and do something about our beliefs.
The Conclusion
Michael Vick very well may be guilty and may or may not get convicted. However, don't be so quick to judge someone of guilt when you yourself don't know ALL of the facts. If your own livelihood were at stake and you were innocent, I think you would hope for the same from your peers. It is too early for any of us to judge Vick, even though nearly every media outlet in the country would tell you otherwise. Wake up America...wake up and see what's really going on. You are being told what to think and being told what's right...and that ain't right.
