TOP FREE AGENT PICKUPS

Quarterback

Rationale

Kellen Clemens
New York Jets

It took the Jets 8 too many weeks to realize that Chad Pennington should not be a starter in the NFL. Kellen Clemens is a young QB that has poise and can be a decent fill in for your bye week. Don't expect hi to be an every week starter.

Jason Campbell
Washington Redskins

After a horrific game against New England (the only team that could make it a close game against the mini-Ditkas) in Week 8, Campbell gets to play the Pats polar opposite (Jets) in Week 9. The Jets are giving up 240 yards a game in the air, and donʼt have much of a pass rush. Campbell has plenty of options at his disposal (Moss, Randle-El, Portis, and Cooley) and should put up over 200 yards and two TDs.

Running Back

Rationale

Ryan Grant
Green Bay Packers

After his solid performance against Denver on Monday night, Grant was named the starter for week 9. The biggest PRO for Grant is that Deshawn Wynn was placed on the IR today. Grab Ryan Grant if you need a 3rd RB or a fill in.

Adminchinobe Echemandu
Houston Texans

Ahman Green was a surprising late scratch on Sunday which led to another Ron Dayne start. As usual, Dayne was less than stellar, so perennial practice-squader Adimchinobe Echemandu was thrown into the mix and did well in limited action (10 carries, 62 yards; 2 catches, 11 yards). With Green making weekly appearances on the injury report, and Dayneʼs ineffectiveness carrying the rock, AE is a good pickup in deeper leagues.

Wide Receiver

Rationale

Reggie Brown
Philadelphia Eagles

He may never get in the endzone but he is getting targeted quite a bit by McNabb in recent weeks. Expect the TD drought to end this weekend against the Cowboys.

DJ Hackett
Seattle Seahawks

Hackett should be returning to action in Week 9 after a suffering a high ankle sprain in the season opener. Heʼll be returning the same time as Deion Branch (also look for him in your FA pool courtesy of some shortsighted owner) and we could see things open up for the Seahawks aerial attack. In Hackettʼs last 4 games last season he averaged 73 yards a game and had 2 TD catches. If he proves to be 100% healthy, he could give you some WR depth for the stretch run.

Tight End

Rationale

Jerramy Stevens
Tampa Bay Buccaneers

With starting TE Alex Smith out for at least another week, "Stone Hands" Stevens could be a good spot play while are Greg Olsen or Jeremy Shockey are out on byes in Week 9. In Week 8, Stevens caught 2 passes for 45 yards and could get a few more looks next week against Arizona.

Defense/Special Teams

Rationale

Oakland Raiders

They may get shredded in the ground most weeks but this weekend they are playing a depleted Houston team that may be without Schaub again due to concussion.
