TOP FREE AGENT PICKUPS

Quarterback

Player

Rationale

David Garrard
Jacksonville Jaguars

He has been very efficient this season (no INTs through 5 games) and is a solid producer that is good for ~200 yards and 1-2 TDs every week with about 30 yards on the ground. Don't expect much more or less from him every week, regardless of the opponent.

Kyle Boller
Baltimore Ravens

Steve McNair finally got benched in Baltimore due to injury and poor play and is replaced by the solid, but never spectacular Kyle Boller. Boller is never going to be an every week starter, but if you’re in need of a bye week fill-in, this is the week to do it. He faces a Buffalo D that is giving up 291 yards/game and almost 2 TD throws per game. It's a great matchup but make sure McNair is out before you insert Boller in your lineup.

Running Back

Player

Rationale

Kevin Jones
Detroit Lions

Incredibly, KJ is available in about 66% of yahoo leagues. In their last game the rushing attempts ratio between KJ and Bell was 11:4. Grab Jones before somebody else does.

Michael Bennett
Tampa Bay Buccaneers

The former Kansas City Chiefs backup was traded to the injury-decimated Tampa Bay Bucs now that Priest Holmes has been cleared to practice. Bennett could do well in Tampa as Pittman recovers. He is a good receiver out of the backfield and can makes big plays with his quickness which could give your team the edge it needs. He will likely miss out on a lot of goalline carries with Earnest Graham still vulturing TDs, but his yardage totals should be good enough to play him as a RB3/Flex until Pittman returns.

Wide Receiver

Rationale

Donte Stallworth
New England Patriots

As expected, teams are starting to roll the coverage focus over to Randy Moss. The benefactor the last few weeks has been Stallworth. Grab him while you can (available in 30% of leagues), and enjoy the beast that is the New England passing game.

Roddy White
Atlanta Falcons

While he doesn’t get many catches (about 4 per game) he has been getting consistent Derrick Mason-type yardage totals (about 70 yards/game). The Atlanta aerial assault isn’t great, but they are usually playing from behind, and Roddy White is clearly Joey Harrington’s favorite target. A nice WR3 fill-in for you while your big guys get healthy.

Tight End

Rationale

Donald Lee
Green Bay Packers

Bubba Franks’ recent knee injury finally settles the debate over which GB TE to play in any given week. For the next few weeks at least, Donald Lee will be the only TE that Brett Favre will have to throw to (in fact he’s the only active one on the roster right now). He had a great game on Sunday and continues to be a big part of the Pack’s offensive game plan from week to week. He has a bye week this week, but if you are forward looking, desperate, or just missed out on Greg Olsen on waivers, stash him away for a week and expect 60-70 yards and plenty of looks in the red zone.

Defense/Special Teams

Player

Rationale

Washington Redskins

Out of their next 3 games they have 2 very favorable matchups. First, they play the Arizona Cardinals, who are decimated at the QB position, and then you should bench them when they play the New England Patriots in week 8, and then it's gravy time again when they play the anemic New York Jets in week 9. The Skins D has been tremendous the last few weeks against a few solid offenses so expect the performance to continue (not counting the Patriots game).
