TOP FREE AGENT PICKUPS

Quarterback

Player

Rationale

Matt Schaub
Houston Texans

Schaub looked decent last week against the KC Cheifs and showed some playmaking ability with his 77 yard strike to Andre Johnson. he could be a worthy backup or fill in for a bye week depending on the matchup.

Trent Green
Miami Dolphins

Not a flashy pickup this week, but one that will get you by for the time being. The Dolphins running game is struggling, so Trent Green will have to take more of the offensive workload on his shoulders. This isn’t exactly a bad thing as the Fins will be playing at home against the turnstile secondary of the Dallas Cowboys in Week 2. Expect somewhere around 230 yds and 2 TDs

Running Back

Player

Rationale

Chris Brown
Tennessee Titans

Leading rusher in the NFL after week #1. Had a huge game against a tough run defense. He hit every hole well in the game and looks to have much more pop than an overwieght LenDale White. Injuries are always a concern for Chris Brown (upright running style) but he has the physical ability to have nice games. Should be a very nice pickup.

Derrick Ward
New York Giants

Brandon Jacobs is out for 3-5 weeks with a knee injury (surprise surprise with his upright running style) and Ward looked nice in the fill in. It is noteworthy that Reuben Drougns had only on carry in Jacob's absence so it appears that Ward is clearly the guy to tote the rock in New York. Grab Him quick.

Michael Pittman
Tampa Bay Buccanneers

With Carnell Williams doubtful this Sunday against New Orleans, Pittman will have to take the unenviable position of running behind one of the leagues worst lines. So why is he a free agent pickup? Well if you owned Brandon Jacobs, Williams, Chester Taylor, Pittman could be a good spot start this week. He is heavily involved in the Bucs passing game when not starting, so he could put up some good all-purpose yards. He should get about 100 all-purpose yards and have a good shot to get a TD on Sunday

Wide Receiver

Player

Rationale

Ronald Curry
Oakland Raiders

Available in about 30% of leagues, Curry had a big game in week #1 and looked to be the clear favorite target of McCown. They have a tough matchup in week #2 but Curry could be a nice guy to grab for the season.

Brandon Marshall
Denver Broncos

The fact that he is still available in 95% of leagues is remarkable. He was targeted on 8 plays in the game and looks to be getting single coverage often with Javon Walker drawing doubles. He was the ability to be a fantasy starter and should be picked up before your league figures him out.

Tight End

Player

Rationale

Marcus Pollard
Seattle Seahawks

Pollard had a good Week 1 performance with 5 catches and 43 yds. Now that Jerramy ‘No Hands’ Stevens is busy dropping passes in Tampa, Pollard has stepped up nicely for the Seahawks. He’s not going to be an every week starter, but he could be a decent pickup when the matchup is right, like this week against Arizona. Expect a similar performance from him, somewhere in the 40-50 yard range and a look or two in the red zone

Defense/Special Teams

Player

Rationale

Indianapolis Colts

The Colts dismantled a good offense in New Orleans in week 1. They were swarming to the ball and being the physical team that they were last year in the playoffs. So long as the heart and sould of the defense (Bob Sanders) is there, expect the attitude and play to be there each week.
